Bergamo City, lying some 40 km northeast of Milan, is a city rich in Italian history. Lying at the foot of the Alps, the city is divided into two sections; Citta Alta or Upper City, and Citta Bassa or Lower City. The two sections of the town are ages apart, each offering its own set of attractions.

The history of the City is similarly intriguing. It is originally believed to have hosted the Celts. Later on the Gauls took over the city before the Romans conquered it and made it a Roman municipality in the year 49 BC. In the 5th Century it was destroyed by Attila, King of the Huns. It was later rebuilt in the 6th Century under the Lombards.  Bergamo fell under the rule of Milan who were overthrown by the Malatesta in the 14th Century. The Malatesta held it for a short period before the Venetian Republic took charge of the city. During Napoleon’s time, Bergamo was included into Italy’s political borders.

A stroll down Citta Bassa gets you through the modern section of the city. Though this was built in the 20th Century, you still get that neo-classical feel in the air. The buildings constructed during the miracolo economico (economic boom) still have an ancient touch to them. The main attractions within this section of the city are the Picture Museum of Carrara Academy and the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art.

The Citta Alta or the Upper City is the older section of the City. This has a lower sense of organisation but it makes up for this with its richness in history. There are several attractions to see within this section. There is the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore built in 1137, the Rocca or Castle built in 1331, and Cittadella which was built in the 14th Century by the Visconti. The visiting sites are somewhat countless; the Citta Alta offers so much to see.
